A Merry Scottish Christmas Bingo as a Self-Help Therapy

“A Merry Scottish Christmas” is a new Hallmark movie that premiered on November 18, 2023, as part of their Countdown to Christmas event. The film stars Lacey Chabert and Scott Wolf and reunites them as siblings after their time together on the popular series Party of Five.

The Plot

The plot revolves around Lindsay (Chabert) and her brother Brad (Wolf), who come together for the holidays in a picturesque Scottish castle. Beautifully adorned with Christmas decorations, the setting is the backdrop for a heartfelt family reunion. The story explores family dynamics and the magic of the holidays in a festive, visually enchanting environment.

The film was shot in authentic Scottish and Irish locations, including Duns Castle in Berwickshire, Scotland, and areas in Wicklow and Westmeath, Ireland, adding to its charm with stunning landscapes and historical settings.

About the Bingo Card

I created a bingo card that we can use to lower dopamine during a time of year when it can get a little too high; all the excitement and rewards, shopping- can make us overspend, become overstimulated, and feel frazzled. What I loved about A Merry Scottish Christmas is that it had numerous positive themes, enough to fill up a bingo card 🙂

Here is what you’ll do.

Grab the bingo card below, and while watching the movie, check off all the positives you find.

Here’s why it works so well:

Playing bingo or watching a show like “A Merry Scottish Christmas” can help lower dopamine by encouraging mindful activities that provide enjoyment without triggering impulsive behaviors like emotional spending.  People who have symptoms of ADHD or trauma, do well with lowering dopamine as it helps them to regulate, focus and prioritize.

Bingo helps by promoting engagement with delayed (or no) rewards. It is about the process.

Players focus on completing a pattern without immediate gratification.

It creates structure and encourages patience, reducing the need for instant dopamine spikes. Social connection during bingo also provides a sense of community, helping manage emotional needs without turning to spending.

Watching a holiday movie like “A Merry Scottish Christmas” slows the pace, offering emotional relaxation and positive reinforcement through connection and nostalgia. It helps shift focus from material rewards to emotional fulfillment, offering a healthier way to engage with the holiday season without the urge to shop.

Both activities help lower dopamine impulses by offering structured, rewarding experiences focusing on relaxation, connection, and enjoyment.

These activities promote emotional regulation and help break the impulsive spending cycle that happens all too often in this season.
