Lesson 1 — The Three Financial Worlds

Goal: Understand how financial anxiety lives in three places—your inner world, your external world, and your healing path—so you can stop fighting yourself and start building safety.

A grounding idea from How to Heal Financial Anxiety

Financial anxiety isn’t a “money problem” alone. It’s often a nervous-system problem wearing money’s clothes.

When people feel unsafe—emotionally, relationally, or physically—money becomes a common place where the fear shows up:

  • avoiding bills or accounts
  • over-researching and still feeling unsure
  • impulsive spending to soothe
  • freezing, procrastinating, or dissociating

This course starts by reducing suffering first, because relief is the doorway to lasting change.

Module: How alleviating suffering brings joy

We all know that ditching the feelings and experiences accompanying suffering brings relief—but how does that happen, and what’s the benefit?

Big question: Can you turn financial pain into more profound peace?

The Three Financial Worlds

1) Inner World

How you view yourself and money—and how you show up with money when no one is watching.

Common signs this is activated:

  • self-judgment (“I’m bad with money”)
  • shame spirals
  • fear of looking at numbers
  • perfectionism (“If I can’t do it right, I won’t do it”)

2) External World

The real-life places your money decisions play out.

Examples:

  • income, debt, savings
  • family dynamics around money
  • work pressure and scarcity
  • spending triggers in daily life

3) Healing Path

The bridge between who you are now and the financial safety you’re building.

This is where we:

  • name the suffering without minimizing it
  • identify patterns without blaming ourselves
  • build small, repeatable practices that create stability

Micro-practice (5 minutes)

Choose one:

  1. Hand-on-heart check-in: “What do I need to feel 5% safer with money this week?”
  2. One-number exposure: Open your bank app and look at one number (balance or last transaction). Breathe. Close it. You’re training safety.

Reflection (journal)

  • Which “world” feels loudest for you right now—inner, external, or healing path?
  • What would “relief” look like this week (not perfection, just relief)?
