Lesson 6 — Grow Into Financial Happiness
Goal: Replace the “trauma mindset” (freeze/avoid/impulse) with small growth steps that compound.
The garden metaphor
Think of your mind (and wallet) as a garden.
Are you growing:
- invasive weeds (debt spirals, avoidance, financial stress)
- or nourishing plants (stability, savings, skills, support)
A stressed mind often says:
- “My situation is just this way.”
- “I’m just an anxious person.”
- “It is what it is.”
You weren’t born feeling hopeless. Something taught your system to protect itself.
Coping strategies that can show up with money
- impulsive spending
- hoarding
- impulsive gift-giving
- buying gifts instead of saying “I love you”
- using gifts to avoid vulnerability
These strategies once helped you cope.
Now we’re building new strategies.
The good news
You don’t clean a garden in one sweep.
You make a path. You pull a few weeds.
You learn. You adjust.
The same is true financially.
Awareness + one small step is progress.
Activity (journal)
Reflect:
- Were you allowed to celebrate yourself?
- Were “small wins” noticed, or only big wins?
- How might that affect spending, saving, or self-trust today?
Small-win practice
Write down one money win from the last 7 days—even if it’s tiny.
